Disney Princess 4 in 1 Crib White

Does this gorgeously feminine crib live up to its fancy reputation?

The Stork Craft Princess 4 in 1 Fixed Side Convertible Crib, White is a beautiful piece of baby furniture. Not only is the girly design perfect for that new baby girl's nursery, but the convertibility means that your little girl will be enjoying that furniture for many years to come. However, the craftsmanship of the crib is a bit questionable, as are some of the materials used to make it.

Stork Craft is one of the leading crib brands but there are others you should check out.

Convertibility for the Ages

I've said it a thousand times, but I'll say it again: anything that can multitask is a winner in my book. I love the idea of spending my hard-earned money only once on a quality piece of furniture that I know will be around for years to come. That is why the convertibility of the Princess crib appeals to me. I have a baby girl on the way, and I know that with this crib, she'll have a bed for many, many moons to come.

The four stages. This crib is much more than a crib. It can be converted into four separate types of bed to suit your little girl's age:

The first (and very obvious) stage is a classic crib. Four fixed sides for the best in security and comfort for the smaller bundles of joy.

The next stage is a toddler bed. The front of the crib is switched out for a small bed rail that's half the length of the crib. This keeps the adventurous toddler from rolling out of the bed in her sleep.

The third stage is a daybed. All that happens is the toddler bed rail is removed so that there are three fixed sides and the front is open. A great option for older toddlers/preschoolers.

The fourth and final stage is the full-sized bed. The front and back of the crib become the headboard and footboard of the bed, respectively. A beautiful bed design for those older kids. And since it's a full sized bed, it could work well into the teen years (or until your daughter becomes embarrassed that her bed has a cute bow engraved on it).

Fixed sides for stability. The nice thing about converting the bed is that there are always three fixed sides (with the exception of the final stage) for security. The bed won't get all wobbly and sketchy just because the front is removed. The fixed sides are secured quite well to one another, and the bottom part that supports the crib mattress is very strong. This crib is well-built and is really sturdy, even when all four sides aren't on it.

The sides are big, but you can totally find an amazing crib toy to go on it! Check out our best crib toys.

Moveable mattress. Another great option for convertibility is the fact that the mattress can move. It can go in three different heights depending on your baby's needs. This is so key in a good crib. The mattress can go up high for a small baby, a bit lower as baby begins to pull herself up, and very low to make toddler access easier.

I like the low setting the best because from about 9 months up, it seems to be the best choice for a climbing baby. Plus, once my daughter is using the toddler bed or daybed, she'll be able to climb up easy.

Assembly and Transitioning

If only we could just go to the store and put a completely put together crib in our car and drive home. That's the stuff parent dreams are made of. But until that becomes a reality, us parents will be stuck with having to put on our hard hats and figuring out how to assemble these cribs.

Assembly definitely required. This crib does not come even a little bit put together. The sides are whole and complete, I'll give Stork Craft that. But that's all that is assembled. It's up to us parents to make this box of wood and hardware into a crib.

With the instructions and included tools, this crib isn't terrible to set up. It's not great, either. If I had done it alone, it probably would have taken about 2 hours to do (mostly because of my giant preggo belly!). But with my husband's help, we did it in just shy of an hour. The instructions were sufficient to get us through the process with only a slight headache.

Easy to convert? The downside of a tough-ish setup is that we'll have to adjust the crib in the future. And since my inquiring mind wanted to know, my husband and I tried converting the crib into the toddler bed to see how doable it was. Honestly, it wasn't hard. The front of the crib came off easily and the toddler bed rail was easy to attach.

I think it's safe to say that converting this crib from stage one to stages two and three won't be bad at all. Converting it into a full-size bed will be more difficult I think. We'll have to disassemble the whole thing and order a conversion kit from Stork Craft. Yay.

Some parts not included. My biggest complaint with the assembling of the crib is that not all pieces were included. There was a small wrench that we needed for one of the steps that was supposed to come with the hardware assembly kit, but it was MIA. Thank goodness I have a handy husband who has every tool known to mankind. I'm thinking this was probably just something that was overlooked during the packaging process at the Stork Craft plant, but it did make me question what else may have been overlooked by the company.

Dreamy Design

This crib is all girl. As someone who usually shoots for gender neutral, I love that I don't have to with this crib. Since it's convertible, I know that this will be my daughter's furniture exclusively. That makes it extra special in my mind.

Fairytale ready. The manufacturer states that they were inspired by fairy tales when designing this crib. That romanticism certainly shows. The triple bow design is reminiscent of a princess, hence the appropriate name. The bows aren't cheesy either, they look very elegant and classy. In addition, I like the scrolling edges on the front and back of the crib. They add these subtle details that really set this crib apart from all of the other white cribs out there.

Paint problems. Okay, so this is something that I struggled with, and after talking to some of my friends, they agreed with me. The color description says white, but all of the pictures make the crib look like either a really pale pink or a cream color. Let me assure you- this crib is snow white.

The other big problem with the paint? It's messily done and it stinks pretty bad. There were parts of my crib that were not painted all the way. Thank goodness they were in unnoticeable spots, like the back side and undersides. And whatever acrylic paint they use smells terrible! Maybe it's just my pregnant mommy nose, but the chemical smell was overwhelming.

We opened the box and let it air out in our driveway all day before we attempted to put it together. Even then, the chemical smell was still lingering in the nursery for a few days. Cracking the window fixed the problem eventually. Maybe that's just what happens when you buy a fresh, newly produced product?

Up to Safety and Quality Standards?

I usually don't question the safety or quality of most big name products I buy. After all, I just assume that the big brands, like Stork Craft, have covered their bases when it comes to providing a quality product that's safe to sell. But after there being missing parts in the assembly box and the chemical reek that was the crib, I started wondering a bit more about those standards.

Meets all standards. This product does meet all safety standards that matter. It's JPMA certified , which means it's been independently tested for safe use by kiddos. It meets all CPSC and ASTM standards. I just threw a lot of acronyms at you, so let me clarify- three separate safety organizations, whose job it is to make sure that there is nothing harmful for your child to be exposed to in commercial baby products, have said that it's perfectly fine to put your baby in this crib.

Does that mean it's really safe? If you are like me, you might let the crummy paint smell and seemingly poor craftsmanship (the paint is messy on this expensive of a crib AND it comes missing assembly pieces?) fill your mind with doubt. So here's my final verdict on safety- this product is safe. The pieces are sturdy and the design will keep kiddos safe.

However, I think the company dropped the ball on quality assurance. There are people out there who have bought this crib with zero smell and zero problems, and there are others, like me, who have had issues. The company is good to work with if there's a problem, but I think they should up their QA and prevent any problems in the first place.

Final Take

The Stork Craft Princess 4 in 1 Fixed Side Convertible Crib, White is undoubtedly beautiful. It's a unique and feminine piece of baby furniture. It can be a baby crib, a toddler bed, a daybed, and even a full bed. The mattress can move and it's sturdily designed with safety in mind. I think that all of these qualities overrule any bad qualities. Although the assembly wasn't the easiest, the quality of the product had some hiccups, and the paint left a chemical smell, I wasn't dismayed by my purchase. I love this crib, and there's nothing that a little fresh air and carefully placed crib bedding can't fix. If you want a beautiful baby crib that your daughter can grow with and love, look no further than this crib.
